More Than 1.2 Million Tourists Traveled Across the Country Over Pchum Ben

PHNOM PENH: Over the three-day Pchum Ben holiday, more than 1.2 million national and international tourists visited different capitals, cities and provinces across Cambodia.

According to the statistics released by the Ministry of Tourism on the number of domestic tourists recorded from 24-26 September 2022, over 1.25 national and international tourist travelled across Cambodia during the three-day Pchum Ben holiday. This includes over 1.24 national tourists and and roughly 14,000 international tourists, who traveled across all 25 provinces of the Kingdom of Cambodia during the festival.

The five provinces that received the highest number of tourists were Battambang, Siem Reap, Kep, Pursat, and Sihanoukville.

At the same time, the Ministry of Tourism added that the flow of tourists during Pchum Ben this year was more active, showing an increase of 89.43% compared to the three days of Pchum Ben in 2021.

The Ministry also stated that the increase in the number of tourists was because the Royal Government allowed people to travel across the country and also visit pagodas, unlike last year. In 2021, people were only able to bring food to monks at the entrance to the pagoda due to an outbreak of Covid-19.

Traffic on the national roads was busy on Monday night, as people left their respective hometowns to return to Phnom Penh while other residents continue to return to the capital city today, especially garment workers who receive 4-5 days off for the festival.

To handle security, public order, and traffic safety during this time, the Capital/Provincial Administrative Unity Command was established with all levels of competent forces facilitating traffic and maintaining law and order on national roads and at other important locations.

At the same time, the Department of Tourism in all capitals and provinces also visited main business establishments and tourist destinations to provide quality services at reasonable prices and continue to strengthen the implementation of tourism safety measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and avoid congestion.

The Ministry of Tourism confirmed that the overall tourism situation and establishment of security and order was normal over the three days with no major problems, even though there was heavy rainfall, flooding and congestion in some major areas and national roads.
